What is IELTS Exam?
IELTS is investing heavily in the further development of its exam and scoring processes to ensure a fair assessment for all examiners and a reliable result for organizations that rely on IELTS as a measure of English language proficiency. What is the framework behind the IELTS exam? IELTS is unique in that it allows an academic or general education exam to be chosen. Both types of IELTS tests measure your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. But the questions are slightly different and one test may be more appropriate for you than the other. Also, you can consult overseas education consultants for any other query.
Types of IELTS Exam
There are four types of IELTS exams:
- Writing
- Reading
- Speaking
- Listening
IELTS Writing
The IELTS written test is assessed by qualified IELTS examiners, who are intensively trained and monitored to ensure compliance and quality of assessment, regardless of where the test is conducted. At least two examiners will record your written test, and sometimes even up to three or four – we do this to ensure the highest level of accuracy and fairness.
You write a test answer that is graded in the sections “task answer”, “coherence and coordination”, “lexical source” and “grammatical and accurate range”. To understand what each of these means, you can see a description of the Writing Group that has detailed information about each phrase and how they relate to the different scores of the possible clauses.
IELTS Speaking
The Speaking test in IELTS is the same conversation you have in your daily life. During the exam, you sit in a private and quiet room with a qualifying exam that invites you to talk. Although it can be difficult to talk to a stranger, make the most of it! With an IELTS exam, you can slow down, speed up, or even repeat a question or phrase if you want – you just have to ask. The exam is there to allow you to do your best.
IELTS Reading
In the reading test, you answer 40 questions. Different types of questions are used, e.g. few choices, True / False / not given, Match, and end of the sentence. Your answers are correct or incorrect, so the assessment is slightly different from the Conversation and Writing exams. You will receive one point for each correct answer, which is determined by the total number of points your group scores.
IELTS Listening
In the ear test, you will answer 40 questions related to the audio clips that sound to you. Your answers are correct or incorrect, so the assessment is slightly different from the Conversation and Writing exams. You will receive one point for each correct answer, which is determined by the total number of characters in your group.
IELTS Framework
The total score of the band is the average of the four partial points, which is rounded to the nearest band or half. The scores of the components are weighted equally.
If the average of the four items ends in .25, the total points of the band will be rounded up to the next half. And if it ends in 0.75, the total points of the band will be rounded up to the next half. If the average ends with a fraction of less than .25 or .75, the total score is rounded down.
