Located on the outskirts of the city, Howes Caverns is the largest underground cavern in the northeast and features natural rock formations and an underground river. The caves were discovered in 1842 by Lester Howe after an accident. Howe one of the cows broke loose; Howe found the cow through the cave’s secret entrance.
At first, the only way to enter the cave was to climb down along ropes and stairs, shimmering through tight spaces and guided by nothing more than a flashlight. It took a whole day to complete the initial rounds. Howes Cave has since been modernized to make it easier for guests to explore the cave’s natural wonders.
When you go to tour Howes Cavern you will take the elevator down to fifteen floors below the surface of the earth. You’ll walk along the rock path, take a boat ride through the river, and you can even take a picture of yourself by the natural rock formations.
