Tricks for macbook users
In Spotlight, compute sums
Although MacOS includes a calculator widget, there is an even easier way to perform quick calculations. Click the Spotlight icon in the top-right corner of your screen, then enter your total. +, -, /, *, and = are equivalent to the plus, minus, divide, multiply, and equals functions on a standard calculator. Your result will appear in the Spotlight box to the right.
Quickly add a foreign or accented character
To type a foreign character or a character with an accent above it, first find the simple version of the letter you need (for example, a for á or s for ß) and hold down the key. Following a brief pause, you’ll be given the option of selecting which variant of the letter you want in a small pop-up box above where you’re typing the letter. Choose one and it will be inserted into the text field.
Is there no Delete key? Not a problem
Not every Mac keyboard includes a Delete key (often abbreviated as ‘Del’). Instead of using backspace to jump to the end of the word you want to delete, simply hold down the Function key and press Delete. This is primarily a problem for MacBook users, but if you’re using a separate keyboard without a Delete or Function key, holding down Control and pressing D also works.
Silently adjust the volume
The volume controls on Apple keyboards are undeniably useful, but there’s one major drawback: they make noise when you press them, thwarting any attempt to quietly silence your Mac. Unbeknownst to many, you can actually mute those volume controls by holding down Shift while pressing them.
Locate a lost password for a website or programme
Your login and password details will be stored deep within your Mac’s keychain for almost all of the programmes on your Mac, as well as many of the websites you visit on it. Don’t worry, they’re encrypted and only accessible locally by the user to whom they’ve been assigned.
If you forget one of these passwords, you can recover it from within your Mac – as long as you remember your user account password.
Open a new Finder window and navigate to your Applications folder. This folder should contain another folder called Utilities. Launch Keychain Access, a programme within it. You can now see every login that has been saved on your computer. You can sort them by name or type, or use the search tool in the top-right corner to find what you’re looking for.
If you want to view the password for any of the logins, you’ll be prompted for your username and login, just as you would if you were installing a new programme or changing your Mac’s security settings.
A PDF or image can be annotated
It can be very frustrating when it comes to PDFs – the most popular file type for business communications – that there is no easy way to edit them – until now.
If you double-click your PDF file, it should open in Preview, the default PDF viewer on your computer (if not, you can find it in your Applications folder). When the document is open, click the pen icon to bring up the markup menu bar.
You can highlight and annotate text to your heart’s content using the tools in that bar.
After you’ve finished annotating it, you can share the PDF by selecting File > Share from the menu bar.
