ENT (Ear, Nose, & Throat), also called otolaryngology is the field of medicine that deals with diagnosing & treating diseases concerned with the ear, nose, throat, head, & neck.
Surgery is usually elective & carried out during the day; an average half-day in theatre that might comprise three operations, which may range from simple procedures that take 15 minutes to more complicated surgeries lasting up to twelve hours.
While most days involve direct clinical care, be it outpatient work or surgery, some time should be allocated to teaching, clinical governance, & departmental & multidisciplinary meetings.
Salary
National Health Service(NHS) consultant salaries are the same for all specialties but vary between Scotland (highest), England, Northern Ireland, & Wales (lowest) & increase with service (up to nineteen years). In 2020 the salary bands range from £77,779 to £109,849.
A “purely” private clinic is rare in the UK. On average, otolaryngologists can make a profit of an additional 98% of their NHS salary by working in the private sector.
In 2018, private otolaryngologists made a profit of £107,000; this is higher than most specialties, only behind orthopedics (£128,000) & radiology (£117,000).

As an ENT technician one can start with Rs. 20 -25 thousand per month. The candidates having ENT Specialist degrees go from Rs.6 to 8 lacks per annum.

Job Roles of an ENT Specialist:
- Managing surgical & medical disorders of the Ear, Nose, & Throat in adult & pediatric patients
- Spending a significant amount of time in diagnosis & a lot of this is outpatient
- Scheduling & operating on some fixed days in a week
- Making rounds in the wards to check the progress of the patient
- Attending to emergencies.
- Specializing in any of the following branches of this specialty:- Pediatric ENT, Head & Neck, Throat, Otology (ear) & Rhinology (nose), Facioplastic.
- Might assist general surgeons, Neurosurgeons, or Eye surgeons in complex cases involving their area of specialization.

Eligibility: 12th examination, minimum of 50% (General category) & 40% (Reserved category) in aggregate of Physics, Chemistry Biology /Biotechnology from a recognized board.
Exam Pattern: NEET-UG is an objective type paper-pencil test. From a total of 180 questions, there are 45 questions each from physics, chemistry, botany, & zoology.

The exam is a 3-hour long paper will negative marking, a deduction of 1/4 mark for every wrong answer.
The test is in English & states in their regional languages e.g. Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Gujarat, & West Bengal, have the paper in their respective regional languages.
Postgraduate Medical Course in broad specialties is of 3 years duration in case of the degree course & 2 years in the case of Diploma courses after MBBS & in the case of super specialties, the duration is 3 years after MD/MS. There is a single eligibility cum entrance examination:-National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for admission to Postgraduate Medical Courses conducted by the Medical Council of India.
The National Board of Examinations is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. It conducts Postgraduate & Post Doctoral examinations in medicine & allied sciences & awards Diplomate of National Board in the concerned discipline. Candidates are selected through the CET test of NBE.
